“Safe and Cheap”: Russia Develops New Technology to Liquefy Natural Gas

The project manager and rector of Chelyabinsk State University Sergey Taskaev said that the new complex will give impetus to the development of hydrogen energy.

“Recent developments in the field of superconductivity and superconducting magnetic field sources have made it possible to achieve a revolutionary breakthrough in the gas liquefaction sector. The research conducted has led to the creation and study of new magnetic materials, the development of heat exchangers and potential designs for liquefaction of natural gas operating with the effect of magnetic cooling. The Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany has announced the start of work on the creation of a liquefaction device, and we, in turn, invite interested companies to partner to create a domestic prototype,” Taskaev continued.

He explained that natural gas is one of the main sources of energy today and will be so in the future. It is currently stored, transported and liquefied all over the world using energy-intensive, technically complex and expensive compressors that operate at very low temperatures, which hinders the active development of hydrogen energy.

“That’s why we started developing a new technology for magnetic refrigeration at room temperatures,” he said. “The proposed approach for use in the low-temperature region has made it possible to develop an efficient liquefaction process for almost any type of natural gas within a single refrigeration unit.” He noted that it will be more durable, safer to use and less noisy, which means it will solve the problem of developing hydrogen energy.”

It is worth mentioning that Chelyabinsk State University is one of the participants of the national project “Science and Universities”. The university provides high-quality education for specialists based on the provision of deep knowledge, scientific and educational technologies that ensure sustainable social and economic development of the South Ural region of Russia and its successful integration into the world community. The university ensures the development of more than 30 scientific schools.
