Safadi conveys a message from Jordanian King Abdullah II to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “In response to an invitation from his Iranian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi began a visit to Tehran today, during which he conveyed a message from His Majesty King Abdullah II to His Excellency Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the situation in the region and bilateral relations.”

The statement added: “Safadi and the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Bagheri Kani, held extensive talks that discussed bilateral relations and regional situations.”

The Foreign Ministry continued: “In response to a question from Iranian state television, Safadi said: I am here today to consult on the dangerous escalation witnessed in the region, and His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein has tasked me to accept the invitation to Tehran, to engage in a clear and frank brotherly discussion about overcoming the differences between the two countries with frankness and transparency in a way that protects the interests of both of our countries, and puts us on the path to building good and brotherly relations based on respect for the other, non-interference in their affairs, and contributing to building a region that is filled with security and peace.”

The statement added: “Regarding the Palestinian issue, Safadi said: I am the Foreign Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which has never been anything but a pioneer in defending the Palestinian issue, defending the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, condemning the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories, and rejecting all escalatory measures taken by Israel that prevent the achievement of security, stability and just peace that we clearly want. Our priority now is to stop the barbaric aggression that our people in Gaza are being subjected to, and to stop all the war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.”

The Foreign Ministry added: “Regarding the assassination of the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, may God have mercy on him, Safadi said… Jordan was clear in condemning this assassination and considering it a heinous crime, an escalatory step that constitutes a violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and an attack on the sovereignty of states. We reject it absolutely, and we demand that there be effective action to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza, and to stop such illegitimate Israeli steps, and the commission of crimes against the brotherly Palestinian people, in order to protect the entire region from the consequences of a regional war whose impact will be devastating for everyone.”

“We want our region to live in security, peace and stability, and we want the escalation to end. As I said in Amman and I emphasize here in Tehran, the first step towards ending the escalation is to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza, stop the violation of the rights of the Palestinian people in the West Bank, stop the escalatory steps that are pushing the region towards more destruction, and fulfill the rights of the Palestinian people to freedom, statehood, decent living and sovereignty in their independent state on their national soil,” Safadi continued, stressing that “this is the historic position that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, is working to achieve,” according to the statement.

Regarding some of what was attributed to Iranian officials, Safadi said: “I have reviewed some of what was attributed to Iranian officials, and they confirmed to me that no Iranian official said it, about the brothers in Iran delivering me a message to Israel, and I informed His Excellency the brother clearly, I am not here carrying a message to Israel, and I am not here to carry a message to Israel.”

“Our only message to Israel was announced in Amman, clearly and explicitly, over the past months: Stop the aggression on Gaza, stop the war crimes against the Palestinian people, stop the escalation steps, and move towards an immediate and permanent ceasefire that will allow us all to work towards achieving a just and comprehensive peace that will not be achieved unless the brotherly Palestinian people obtain their full rights, foremost among which is their right to freedom, sovereignty, and dignity in their independent state,” he stressed.

Safadi concluded: “We have begun an in-depth dialogue that we are completing now, within the framework of consultations on how our position can be clear in condemning the crime that was committed, and in emphasizing the need to respect Iran’s sovereignty and international law, while at the same time protecting our region from disastrous consequences.”

Al-Safadi reiterated that “the first step required for this is to stop the aggression against our people in Gaza.”
