Kinshasa, March 11, 2024- The lanterns of the two-day Council of Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held in Luanda, the Angolan capital from March 10 to 11, 2024 have gone out.
On the last day, the participants adopted, behind closed doors, article by article the 7 points on the agenda for which the experts had made 47 proposals.
The ministers reviewed the status of implementation of the decisions of the SADC Council and the Summit as well as the progress made in the implementation of the various regional integration programs and activities. They also assessed the progress made during the 2023/2024 financial year and deliberated on the outlook for 2024 and 2025.
The Luanda meetings focused on the general theme “human and financial capital, the main vector of sustainable industrialization in the SADC region”, articulated around 7 points. These include the state of finances, the implementation of the regional program in favor of SADC youth, and various issues where the DR Congo provided an information point on its desire to become a member of the organ troika in August 2024.
It was the Minister of External Affairs of Angola, Ambassador Tete Antonio, who closed these meetings.
To this end, he welcomed the presence of all the ministers of SADC member countries who took part in the Council of Ministers held in Angola from March 10 to 11, 2024. The Angolan diplomat
believes that all decisions adopted will be implemented. He also thanked the Secretariat and the entire team who worked to ensure that SADC remained a strong organization for the region.
It is at the level of the Council of Ministers that member states meet to ensure the implementation of the recommendations adopted.
Member States were urged to support the implementation of the proposals adopted in Luanda.
Concerning disaster management in the SADC region, cyclone risks have been announced since the end of 2023 and will continue into 2024.
The Council of Ministers adopted the convening of a meeting of member states to express their views on obtaining funds for losses and damages.
As for food security following drought or very high rainfall observed in particular in Lesotho, Botswana Zambia, Mozambique, DR Congo, Angola, etc., the Council urged Member States to urgently carry out assessments at national level, the impact of drought and flooding in order to determine the measures to be taken, to provide support to affected farming communities. Recall that the Council of Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is one of the structures of this regional organization which oversees the function and development of SADC and ensures that policies and decisions are implemented accordingly.
Note that DR Congo was represented at this Council by the Minister of State for Regional Integration, Antipas Mbusa Nyamwisi, accompanied by experts from the Ministries of Planning, National Defense, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
