In order to avoid possible accidents or even deaths, for the safety of road users, the traffic of cyclists on the national road Smiltynė-Nida is prohibited.
In addition, the repair of the Smiltynė-Nida section of the country road will begin soon. The almost 10 km long road section from Alksnynė to Juodkrantė will be repaired. In this section of the road, the asphalt surface is uneven, worn, damaged and defective. During the repair, it is planned to replace all the asphalt layers on this road, install a new surface and fix other road infrastructure. During the repair works, traffic will be carried out on one side of the road (in sections).
Those who are currently cycling from Smiltynė will not reach Juodkrantė settlement via the cycle path either. The 13.5 km long section reconstructed last year ends a few kilometers before Juodkrantė.
“As the weather warms, we are seeing an increase in the flow of cyclists who, despite the ban, are choosing to travel by bike on the road intended for cars. The country road from Alksnynė to Pervalka is not only narrow, but also in extremely bad condition, with poor visibility. There are no curbs on this stretch. Cyclists are putting their lives at risk by driving on the road intended for cars,” says Neringa Municipality Mayor Darius Jasaitis.
According to the mayor, the bicycle path reconstruction works are organized smoothly. As promised by the contractors, the reconstruction of the section of the bicycle path to Juodkrantė is promised to be completed in just a month.
It is aimed that already in the first weeks of June it will be possible to reach Juodkrantė by bicycle. The municipality of Neringa is currently dealing with the issues of transporting cyclists from Juodkrantė to other settlements – there are discussions with existing transporters regarding how such a service might be ensured.
