The deceased Adama Gaye was a descendant of Farba Boubou Gaye, the founder of Matam around 1512. He also held the title of Farba de Matam, also known as Jom Matam (owner of Matam in Poulary), as indicated in the ‘APS. In this region in the north of the country, it is said that the Gaye and Bâ families were the first inhabitants of Matam.
“They had concluded a pact which has remained in force until now in this locality. For example, marriages are always celebrated among the Bâ. Before joining the marital home, the bride must visit the Gayes,” explained Abou Diaw, a teacher living in the Soubalo district.
