Sabrina Carpenter reveals her strategy for writing the lyrics for ‘Espresso’ on the Hot Ones episode, Thursday (11/7).

“I like to see… whether people can relate to the lyrics,” Carpenter, 25, told host Sean Evans.

“A lot of what I like is the punchline,” he added. “If people don’t know the punchline, it feels like a waste. That’s how I feel regarding ‘me espresso.’ I hear a lot of people say, ‘She should have said, “That’s that blonde espresso, duh.”’”

The “Please, Please, Please” singer concluded, “And I was like, ‘Yeah, right. That’s another song that deserves a place in the world, but this one for me… ‘me espresso’ just felt like the right thing to say, and it rhymes with the previous line.”

Carpenter also opened up regarding learning to trust her instincts through her song “Nonsense” and how it almost didn’t make the tracklist for her album “emails I can’t send.”

“The lesson I learned from ‘Nonsense’ is, this song really fits my personality and I started to doubt whether it fits the album or me as an artist and that taught me a lot of lessons going forward,” he explained.

“On the next album, whatever feels most honest and connected to me, I feel like will connect with other people.”

Carpenter released “Espresso” on April 12 and performed the song live for the first time during her performance at the Coachella music festival.

Since its release, the song has spent 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 3.
