“If up to now Mr. Valotka has been handing out such linguistic slaps to one or another group of society, then such a failure to respond to my suggestion to terminate the employment relationship is already a bit of a slap to the state itself, because, in my opinion, the head of the State Language Inspectorate – it is in no way compatible that such a person would speak Soviet jargon during public events,” S. Kairys told LRT radio on Tuesday.
He has already given a second remark to the head of the inspection and urged him to resign from his position, after the latter stated, while participating in the REDA conference, that transporters in Lithuania speak “some Churkish languages”. A.Valotka later said that he wanted to say “Turk”, but he pronounced this word incorrectly.
The first remark was addressed to the head of the Language Inspectorate in August of this year for the fact that he compared the desire of Polish residents living in the Vilnius district to have notes in their native language with the situation in the Russian-occupied Donbass region of Ukraine on an LRT radio show.
The head of the State Language Inspectorate informed the minister in writing on Friday that he will not resign from his position.
According to the minister, A. Valotka does not cope with his duties and does not understand how he should behave while performing them.
“When we were really looking for such a respectful way to end this whole story, we just got such a refusal and further preaching that it is not necessary for us to meet often, the head of the inspectorate and the minister, we can act without interfering with each other. He emphasizes that he has huge public support,” the minister said.
S. Kairys believes that, according to his statements, A. Valotka could work in the political sphere, and not perform functions related to the state language.
The minister claims that he has met with the head of VLK several times, but this issue is not something “we get up in the morning and discuss every day”. S. Kairys says that he notices that the institution itself is “difficult to find a place under the sun”, and to a large extent this is determined by the manager.
“There are certain nuances of the regulation of the civil service, I do not promise to humiliate myself in any way, just to occupy it so that Valotka becomes the most important part of the sector. I have said – I don’t see joint work, it will be reflected in daily activities when there is no joint vision, I think that work will be complicated enough”, said S. Kairys.
According to the Minister, the Seimas has a bill to amend the State Language Law, so politicians will be able to discuss issues in this area.
