Ryanair Strikes: A Vacation Nightmare for Sofie Geerdens

2023-07-15 17:41:00

In June 2022, Sofie Geerdens was to fly to Malta with Ryanair. A beautiful trip with her boyfriend which however never took place since the departure fell in the middle of a strike by the Belgian staff of the airline. A hard blow for the Limburger who therefore might not go on vacation.

The young Belgian therefore thought she was immune to such a mishap this year. What were the chances that, for the second year in a row, one of its flights would fall once more during a surprise Ryanair strike? Obviously, very high odds.

This year, Sofie was still able to enjoy her vacation in Corfu. A stay that ended this Sunday evening since the young woman and her friend were to return… to Charleroi. “But on Thursday evening, I suddenly received an email informing me that the return flight was cancelled. Ryanair did offer another flight, but it doesn’t leave until Wednesday. And I have to work on Monday,” she told Belang van Limburg.

If she was able to find another flight (less advantageous) to return to Belgium, Sofie rails once morest the attitude of the Irish company. “Our holidays are unfortunately cut short by one day. It’s unbelievable that Ryanair warns travelers so little in advance. And that doesn’t help Sofie, who now has to pay extra since she’ll be landing in Zaventem… while her car is in Charleroi.

In short for her, the decision is made: “It was the last time I flew with Ryanair”. Good advice all the same: never travel at the same time as Sofie!
