Ryanair Pilot Strikes: Impact, Recurrence, and Negotiations

He assumes the will to go to the finish, despite the disarray of the passengers concerned by this new strike. “It was illusory to think that we would only strike for two days. When you enter such a movement, you only stop if you get something, he says. If Ryanair does not come back seriously around the table, the rest of the summer risks being catastrophic, with other movements.

Concretely, we must therefore expect a new movement – at least – during the month of August, but also in September. “We are not going to organize long strikes, but small and recurrent ones, as long as we do not get an agreement. The idea is to do several per month and even beyond the summer if necessary.”

The recurrence will therefore be higher than for the cabin crew strikes, organized in 2022. “It was when we intensified the movement that Ryanair ended up moving. So hopefully it will be the same this time around.”

In terms of impact for passengers, something similar to last weekend is to be expected. For the record, 120 flights were canceled departing from or arriving at Charleroi airport, for approximately 20,000 passengers concerned. The reasons are obviously always the same. Ryanair pilots are asking for their salaries to be restored, which had been cut by 20% at the time of the health crisis. If the management has accepted the restoration of salary conditions, it refuses to index these amounts, which is illegal, according to the unions. In addition, pressure is put on the striking pilots who have filed a complaint with the labor court. Without withdrawal of complaints, management will refuse to negotiate. Finally, an increase in hours without a salary increase provided for in a new labor agreement set fire to the powder.

During the week, the management offered a meeting to the pilots. “But, as usual, these are just threats. There is no concrete proposal on the table, launches Didier Lebbe. We will not go to negotiations without a concrete proposal to start the discussions. It’s too late to turn in circles, we’ve been doing it for too long.”
