Ryanair Pilot Strike: Canceled Flights and Demands for Fair Wages and Working Hours

2023-07-29 10:47:00

A total of fifty Ryanair flights departing from and arriving in Charleroi are canceled on Saturday. Forty-six flights will be canceled on Sunday.

The pilots gathered in front of the airport calmly, described Didier Lebbe. In his eyes, this strike action demonstrates the will of the pilots to continue their fight. “The attitude of the company helps us in our struggle,” said the union representative, speaking of a “provocative” management. “She hopes the movement is running out of steam, but it isn’t. And her attitude only increases the anger.” A first strike weekend had already been observed on July 15 and 16.

A Belgian pilot: “If passengers book a ticket with Ryanair until October 2024, there is a good chance that their plane will not take off”

According to the CNE, three elements are problematic: wages, working hours and the request by management to withdraw the complaints filed in court.

The pilots are demanding the restoration of their wages following the cuts granted at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Didier Lebbe, it lacks regarding 18% compared to what would be due to the pilots. During the health crisis, an agreement “under the threat of dismissal” on a 20% reduction in salary had been concluded, recalls the representative of the Christian union. Since then, salaries have not been increased. The union does not know at this stage whether it is a non-indexation or a non-respect of the agreement reached during the pandemic. However, this agreement does not have the status of a convention. It has not been registered and cannot be the subject of a possible complaint, according to the permanent secretary.

Regarding the complaints already filed in court, Didier Lebbe indicates that it is impossible to withdraw them, the investigations having already been launched.
