Ryanair is once once more at the heart of a new controversy. In order to get their digital boarding pass, passengers are forced to pay for a random seat.
Already heavily criticized for its price supplements, Ryanair has recently introduced a new imperative which is causing outrage among travelers: a compulsory payment to add a random seat in order to receive the digital boarding pass. For this, it costs between 9 and 25 euros.
Exasperated passengers
In the columns of Daily Mail, a passenger who was the victim of this change testifies: she had chosen a random seat during her flight from London to Germany. A message was then displayed on the Ryanair app: “Check-in completed! Get your boarding pass now and avoid queuing at the airport by adding a seat.” The traveler, indignant, finally accepted.
On the web, the reactions of Internet users expressing their anger follow one another. Passengers point out a practice contrary to online check-in, which is precisely intended to avoid queues at the airport. “So, Ryanair, you are forcing travelers who do not want to reserve a seat to queue at a desk and have their boarding pass printed,” explains one customer facing this problem.
Ryanair kicks in
“It’s great for the environment and another opportunity for passengers to pay more to travel. A new low for Ryanair. Absolutely shameful,” he continues. “Ryanair says I have to check in online, but they don’t give me the boarding pass online to force me to pay for a seat. What am I buying with the ticket, if not a seat to fly?”, launches a second on X (Twitter).
This new tax is in addition to the numerous additional costs imposed by Ryanair, such as the reservation of a seat, or the cost of baggage and supplements for any excess weight. The company explains that passengers had the choice of reserving a seat by paying or being assigned a random seat for free, without addressing allegations that the company is forcing customers to purchase a digital boarding pass.
