Actor Ryan Reynolds’ bid to buy the Ottawa Senators will not go forward, multiple sources have told ESPN.
The NHL declined to comment on the situation when approached by ESPN.
Reynolds was tied to the Remington Group to make an offer to buy the Senators. The sale of the Senators — announced in November following the death of former owner Eugene Melnyk — has spurred interest from several celebrities and groups and appears to be heading for a bidding war.
Snoop Doog has announced he is part of a bid led by Los Angeles businessman Neko Sparks, as The Weeknd has joined billionaires Jeffrey Michael Kimel, according to the Ottawa Sun.
According to the sources, Reynolds’ request for an exclusive window to complete the deal was denied. The deadline for groups to submit final offers is May 15.
A recent valuation by Forbes magazine put the Senators’ worth at $800 million. The Remington Group’s offer was over $1 billion, according to multiple sources.
In December, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed the league had met with Reynolds regarding his interest in becoming an NHL owner.
“Reynolds is very impressed with us. If we can find a way to include him, I think that would be great for the Senators and for the league. He is very intelligent, he owns several companies in addition to his acting career and he understands the world of sports and promotion. I believe he told us that his subscriber count on all of his platforms combined was over 100 million,” Bettman said at the NHL Governors meeting in December.
Reynolds, who grew up in Canada, confirmed his interest in an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in November.
