Moscow ∙ The retreat of Wagner’s mercenaries, who shocked Russia with an unexpected campaign, is complete. After reaching 200 km from the capital Moscow, the insurgents retreated as a result of settlement negotiations. The situation calmed down following the military headquarters in the city of Rostov, which had been captured earlier, was also given up. Chechen mercenaries stationed in Moscow and Rostov along with Russian forces retreated to stop the Wagner group.

The head of the group, Yevgeny Prigoshin, ordered Wagner fighters to continue fighting in Ukraine alongside Russian forces. The government assured that Wagner gang members would be inducted into the Russian army. The Russian government has announced that no action will be taken once morest Prigosh and Pada for attempted rebellion. Under the terms of the settlement, Prigozhin will travel to neighboring Belarus. At the request of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prigozhin withdrew the troops following day-long talks on Saturday with the intervention of staunch ally Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

Ukrainian intelligence speculates that Prigosh’s demand to replace top officials, including Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, may have been part of the settlement terms. The Western assessment is that Putin’s sovereignty in Russia has been shaken even though the rebellion has been stopped.

Meanwhile, it has been argued that there are still no problems between Prigosh and Putin. This gives rise to suspicion that the drama was staged as part of the renewal of war strategy in Ukraine. Russia reportedly repelled attacks by Ukrainian forces in Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Bahmut yesterday. Putin announced that actions in Ukraine are progressing according to plan.

China has expressed solidarity with Russia. Videos have surfaced of people saluting members of the Wagner group and Prigosh as they retreated from Rostov.
