It is known that Russia interrogated the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Sergei Surovikin, who is suspected of acquiescing despite knowing regarding the Wagner Group mutiny. Internal division seems to be deepening over responsibility for the rebellion, with some arguing that Defense Minister Shoigu is responsible.

Bloomberg News reported on the 1st (local time) that President Putin is trying to find out high-ranking officials who are believed to be involved in the rebellion, and movements once morest military leaders, including Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, are expanding.

An insider said that Surovikin was interrogated by the authorities. Surovikin said that he was not in custody, but that his movement was restricted.

Dubbed “General Armageddon” for his ruthless operations, Surovykin is known to have a close relationship with Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group. He was appointed commander-in-chief in charge of the war in Ukraine in October of last year, but was sacked last January following three months. Suspicions arose following the Wagner Group mutiny that he acquiesced to the revolt even though he knew regarding it. CNN reported that Surovikin was a secret VIP member of Wagner’s group.

Political analyst Sergei Markov said: “A large-scale investigation has been launched. All generals and officers who have had contact with Prigozhin and the Wagner group will be interrogated.”

Other sources said a wide-ranging investigation was underway targeting Shoigu’s aides. An official from the Ministry of Security said that calls for his dismissal are growing. During the war in Ukraine, Prigozhin has repeatedly accused Russian military leaders, including Minister Shoigu, of being incompetent.

After the uprising was over on the 24th of last month, President Putin has been attempting to end the situation by informing the public that the country is still alive and well through public actions such as TV speeches and regional visits. However, following this rebellion, the position of President Putin’s aides, including Minister Shoigu, is weakening due to a ‘power vacuum’, and insiders say that doubts regarding President Putin’s control are growing among the political and business elites.
