Russia’s bridge to Crimea on fire

An explosion on the main route to the occupied peninsula has claimed at least three lives. Representatives of the Ukrainian secret services have said anonymously that they were behind the attack. It would be a prestige success with high risks.

The Kerch Bridge, the main link between mainland Russia and the occupied Crimea peninsula, was severely damaged by an explosion early Saturday morning. According to the Russian Anti-Terrorism Committee, a truck detonated on the bridge, although the information left open whether an accident or an attack was meant. The traffic had to be stopped on the car as well as on the railway line. In the followingnoon, emergency operations for cars towards Russia might be resumed. According to the Russian agency Tass, the first passenger train from Moscow drove back to the peninsula in the evening. A ferry service is also set up. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, freight and long-distance passenger trains have been running according to the timetable since Sunday followingnoon. Regional traffic should also start once more in the evening, it said.
