“Russia’s Billionaire Boom: Forbes Reveals Top 110 Richest Russians”

Russia now has 110 billionaires, 22 more than the list leaked last year. The magazine points out that it might have been even longer if five billionaires had not renounced their Russian citizenship.

At the top of the ranking, we find Andrey Melnichenko, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at 25.2 billion dollars (Editor’s note: +- 22.7 billion euros). According to the business magazine, the boss of fertilizer producer EuroChem saw his wealth double last year. This is because fertilizer prices have reached record highs. They have since fallen once more.

The price of commonly used metals, such as nickel, zinc and tin, has also increased. This seems to have benefited Vladimir Potanin, president and main shareholder of the metals producer Nornickel. He sits on the second step of the podium with assets estimated by Forbes at 23.7 billion dollars (Editor’s note: +- 21.3 billion euros).

The Russian economy was only slightly affected by Western sanctions linked to the war in Ukraine. The contraction amounted to 2.1%, less than earlier estimates by experts, according to Russian statistics agency Rosstat.

“The results of last year’s estimate were also influenced by doomsday predictions regarding the Russian economy,” Forbes said.
