The news agency Yonhap writes that the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian ambassador to answer questions about the possible use of North Korean soldiers.

South Korean authorities have published satellite images of what are allegedly North Korean soldiers on Russian soil. According to the South Koreans, North Korea plans to send as many as 12,000 soldiers to help the Russians in the war against Ukraine.

– Not a danger to South Korea

The Russian embassy in Seoul says that cooperation between Russia and North Korea is not aimed at South Korea, and emphasized that “cooperation between Russia and North Korea is not detrimental to South Korean security”.

NATO chief Mark Rutte says that if the accusations are true, the situation could become serious.

– If North Korea were to send forces to Ukraine to fight on behalf of Russia, it would escalate the conflict significantly, writes Rutte on X.

Zelenskyy reacts

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also sees this as an escalation of the war.

– We must respond and counter this. We cannot allow evil to grow stronger. If the world is quiet now, and we are met by North Korean soldiers on the front line as often as we defend ourselves against drones, it will serve no one in the world. It will only prolong the war, he said in a video speech on Sunday.

In a statement, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it hopes that all parties will de-escalate the situation, according to Reuters.
