Russians report explosions in Belgorod, Ukraine – attacks in Kharkiv

Ukraine’s air force said rockets were flying toward the capital Kyiv on Tuesday morning, and AFP reporters heard more than 10 loud explosions in the capital that shook buildings in the center.

The announcement came shortly following a nationwide air alert was declared over the threat posed by Russian bombers and warnings of missile strikes from Russian bombers.

The city’s military administration said debris from the downed missiles fell in several neighborhoods, including residential buildings.

Mayor Vitalijs Klyčko said that electricity went out in several districts of the capital.

“Kyjiv – stay in cover. Many missiles are flying in your direction,” the air force said on the Telegram platform.

They said that the Russians had launched Kinzhal missiles and that more were flying towards the capital.

Earlier, the force had reported: “Missile threat in areas with air threat activated!” There is a threat of launching cruise missiles from Tu-95MS aircraft. A total of 16 Tu-95MS strategic bombers are in the air.”

Kharkiv, located in the northeast, was also hit, said Oleh Synjehubov, the head of the military administration.

Drone attack in Kyiv

Ukraine’s air force responded to a drone attack in the capital on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Klychko had announced the explosions in the capital regarding an hour following the region’s military administration said unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, had been detected in the city’s airspace.

“The wreckage of the UAV is burning in an open area in the Desniansky district,” he said, adding that rescue services had arrived at the scene.

From 3 o’clock 30 minutes morning local (and Lithuanian) time, weather warnings were issued in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.

The mayor of Mykolaiv said the air force shot down drones in the city and the debris started a fire.

Hours earlier, the military warned that regarding 20 Russian strategic bombers were in the air.

Several Tupolev Tu-95MS bombers were in Russian airspace when these planes were detected taking off from Olenia Airfield in the far north and Engels Air Base in the south, the military told Telegram.

Four more Tu-22M3 bombers had taken off from Russia’s Shaikovka airfield near the Belarusian border.

On December 29, the Air Force announced that the Tupolev Tu-95 aircraft, manufactured in the Soviet era, had taken off.

That day, Russia launched a wave of strikes in Ukrainian cities, including the capital, killing 39 people.

Tuesday’s drone strikes come a day following Russian President Vladimir Putin said his forces would step up strikes once morest military targets in Ukraine following an unprecedented weekend Ukrainian attack on the Russian city of Belgorod.

Saturday’s attack killed 25 people, including five children.

Moscow also struck Ukrainian cities on New Year’s Eve, with Kyiv saying it had thwarted what Ukrainians say was a record number of Russian drone launches.
