The adventure novel “The Three Musketeers” by Alexandre Dumas père was filmed several dozen times by directors around the world. Screenwriters and directors often allowed themselves to deviate from the literary source, experimenting with both the characters and the plot. And not all of their undertakings were enthusiastically accepted by the public.
So, in the spring of this year, another film adaptation created by Bill Thomas will be released on the screens. The British director decided to leave the action also in France of the 17th century, but presented the audience with his vision of the cast. For the main role of D’Artagnan, the director invited the black actor Malachi Pullar-Latchman, for whom the picture became the fourth project.
Netizens weren’t thrilled with the unexpected casting decision. Discussing the trailer, they criticized Thomas for being historically unreliable and trying to make a famous story more relevant.
“I did not expect this”, “Life did not prepare me for the dark-skinned D’Artagnan”, “Well, finally, the dark D’Artagnan. And I was already starting to worry that political correctness would not get to the Three Musketeers”, “Black Gascon? It is a masterpiece!” – the audience is outraged.
Also, many noted that following such a trailer they are unlikely to go to the cinema. They are not ready to support such experiments.
