Russian wrestlers refuse to participate in 2024 Olympic Games

The statement released by the federation on July 6, in particular, said that the IOC allowed “ten Russian wrestlers” to participate in the Olympics, six of whom are far from being the leaders of the Russian team, Meduza.oi reports.

“The International Olympic Committee has become an obstacle on Abdulrashid Sadulaev’s path to a third Olympic summit, has not given Zaurbek Sidakov, Zaur Uguev, Musa Yevloyev and other wrestlers of the Russian national team the opportunity to compete, and the United World Wrestling has lost its last chance to ensure that the Olympic Games are a competition of the strongest,” the statement said.

The Federation’s Executive Committee held an extended meeting with the coaching staff of the Russian national teams in freestyle, women’s and Greco-Roman wrestling and with athletes who received invitations to the Olympic Games, during which a unanimous decision was made to withdraw from participation in the Olympic Games.

“The Russian Wrestling Federation, athletes and coaches of the Russian national teams in freestyle, women’s and Greco-Roman wrestling will not follow the lead of politicians and will not allow the spirit of the Russian team to be broken. We do not accept the unsportsmanlike selection principle that the International Olympic Committee was guided by when forming the list of admitted athletes, the purpose of which is to undermine the principle of unity of our team,” the statement emphasizes.
