Citing U.S. officials, the New York Times reported that Russia and Ukraine have lost nearly 500,000 military casualties since the 18-month war between the two countries.
U.S. officials said Russian military casualties were closer to 300,000, including as many as 120,000 dead and 170,000 to 180,000 soldiers wounded, while Ukraine had nearly 70,000 dead and 100,000 to 120,000 wounded.
In terms of numbers, the casualties of the Russian army are obviously heavier than that of the Ukrainian army, but the Russian army is almost three times that of the Ukrainian army, and Russia has more people to fill its military strength.
Analysts pointed out that Ukraine has regarding 500,000 troops, including active duty, reserve and paramilitary forces, compared with Russia’s 1.33 million active, reserve and paramilitary troops, most of which come from the Wagner Group.
The last time the Biden administration released casualty estimates was in November last year, when Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said casualties on both sides had exceeded 100,000.
But U.S. officials say casualty figures remain difficult to estimate because Russia routinely undercounts war casualties and Ukraine does not disclose official figures.
