Russian-Ukrainian Conflict: Thwarted Attack, Nuclear Power Plant, and Military Advances

Russia has announced that it has thwarted an attack by two Ukrainian drones on Moscow and surrounding areas. Ukraine, on the other hand, has denied Russia’s allegations of an attack on the nuclear fuel storage facility at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that both drones were shot down by air defense systems, noting that there were no casualties or property damage in the accident.

On the other hand, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that one of the drones was shot down in the Domodedovo region and the other was shot down near the Minsk highway.

Russia’s Belgorod region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that Ukraine shelled a village in the region, killing one person and wounding four.

“Ukrainian troops shelled Shukovsky, five shells exploded in the center of town near the school,” Gladkov said on Telegram, adding that a man was killed and three others and a woman were wounded.

Bombing of towns near the Russian border has been rare since Russia began raids on Ukraine in February 2022, but has intensified in recent months, especially in the Belgorod and Kursk regions.

In Ukraine, the Ukrainian General Staff said the Russian army launched a winged missile attack, carried out 53 airstrikes and fired 86 shells from rocket launchers in the past 24 hours. This resulted in many civilian casualties and damage to civilian installations and infrastructure.

For the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant

In related context, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mikhail Podoglyak denied Russia’s allegations that Kiev attempted to attack the spent nuclear fuel depot at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

“There is no doubt that Ukraine has never, has no intention of, and will not consider launching a drone attack on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant,” Podoliak said in a statement.

The Russian news agency TASS said the Ukrainian military attempted to attack the storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

Russian forces intercepted an attack drone in Enel Khodar, where the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is located, the agency said. According to it, analysis of the drone’s trajectory showed it was heading for a spent nuclear fuel storage facility, which, if it happened, might lead to a nuclear catastrophe.

Russian advance

On the battlefield, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian army continued to make progress, strengthening its tactical points in the Kharkov region (eastern Ukraine) and eliminating 795 Ukrainian soldiers on all axes.

Sergei Zbinsky, spokesman for Russia’s Western Military District, said Russian troops took control of Ukrainian military positions in the direction of Kupyansk in the Kharkov region.

Zbinski added that Russian troops took control of Ukrainian army positions and repelled several Ukrainian attacks in that direction.

In Liman, Donetsk region, the Russian Ministry of Defense said it repelled an attack by Ukrainian troops, with helicopters attacking Ukrainian army positions and command and control centers.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian General Staff said it continued its counter-offensive on three fronts in Donetsk and Zaporozhye, and confirmed that it had repelled Russian attacks in the direction of Kupyansk and Liman.

Podoliak said Ukraine’s counterattack was continuing and called for patience.

He noted that, according to him, by the end of the military missions performed by the Ukrainian army, Russia will no longer pose a military threat to Europe and Ukraine.
