Russian Threat to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: Concerns and Denials

2023-07-05 16:07:37

Russia is ready to blow up the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which might lead to a nuclear disaster, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his concern. The claims of Ukrainian officials have been in the air for weeks, but in recent days they have been mentioning Russia’s “plans” more and more. However, the Ukrainian intelligence has just recently confirmed that the Russian army has reduced its presence at the nuclear power plant, “they will evacuate the plant by Monday and hopefully move to Crimea.” In any case, Ukraine recently held a nuclear disaster response exercise in the vicinity of the power plant, as they believe Russian forces undermined the plant. Zelensky also called on the public to pay more attention to the events surrounding the facility and called a meeting with military and nuclear energy officials for security measures. However, the Kremlin denied the accusations, and Russia’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, also said that they “have no intention of blowing up the nuclear power plant.” The Ukrainian government has been making its claims for weeks, to which some independent experts, including David Sachs, have responded. According to him, it is quite interesting that they started issuing warnings regarding Russian plans just following the visit of US Senator Graham – despite the fact that the nuclear power plant was under Russian control and blowing it up would not benefit them either.
