Russian Supreme Court Rules LGBT Activists as ‘Extremists’: UN Calls for Repeal of Discriminatory Laws

(Archyde.com, Moscow, 30th) The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation ruled today that LGBT activists should be deemed “extremists”, a move that has left gay and transgender representatives fearful of possible arrest and prosecution. The United Nations (UN) human rights commissioner immediately called on Russia to repeal laws that discriminate once morest LGBT people.

The Russian Ministry of Justice requested a ban on “international LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) social movements”, and the presiding judge announced that he agreed with the Ministry of Justice’s request.

Russia is increasingly restricting the expression of sexual orientation and gender identity, including legislation banning the promotion of “non-traditional” sexual relationships and banning legal or medical gender changes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on the Russian authorities to “immediately repeal laws that unduly restrict the work of human rights defenders and discriminate once morest LGBT people.”
