Russian scientists develop a way to obtain materials needed to build lunar bases

“Scientists from the Laboratory of Nuclear Technology at the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia have collaborated with scientists from the Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and have developed a method for producing highly durable ceramic materials suitable for building bases on the moon,” said Russian chemist and project manager for developing new materials, Oleg Shchechalin.

He added: “The raw materials needed for the project were obtained from volcanoes located in the Russian Far East. These volcanoes have the same composition as lava and contain what is called basaltic andesite.”

The scientist pointed out that volcanic soil contains materials that can be heated very quickly, which can be used to produce new compounds with special specifications for building lunar bases.

“The use of new materials as an alternative to lunar soil will help scientists develop some technologies necessary for future missions to the Moon. This is especially important in conditions where lunar soil is difficult to obtain. Research conducted by Russian scientists in this area is important for achieving the global goal of creating a permanent base on the Moon,” the press service of the Russian Ministry of Education said in a statement.

It is worth noting that the Russian agency Roscosmos had signed an agreement with China in 2021 to establish a scientific station on the moon. Within the framework of this station program, China is supposed to send Chang’e-6, Chang’e-7 and Chang’e-8 vehicles to the moon. The purpose of the first lunar missions will be to test basic technologies that will help start building a complex of remotely controlled experimental research facilities.
