Russian scientists are creating a database of endangered dolphins

Russia – Scientists in the Republic of Crimea entered the database about a thousand bottlenose dolphins after identifying them.

This number includes the majority of bottlenose dolphins that live in the waters of the Black Sea basin. This was announced by Dr. Grena Logiminova, a researcher at the Karadag Scientific Station, during a press tour with the Russian Ministry of Tourism through the region. She said: “For the first time in the region, we are using a visual monitoring method, noting that each bottlenose dolphin has a unique distinctive whistle, which can be compared to human fingerprints.”

When the dolphin enters the marine area, it whistles regularly. This is how dolphins stay in touch with each other. This sound spreads for tens of kilometers, and therefore, we have developed a database that now includes about a thousand bottlenose dolphins, and I explained that there are now about 1,200 or 1,300 bottlenose dolphins in the Black Sea region.

Three species of dolphins now live in the Black Sea and the Sea of ​​Azov: the Azov dolphin, the white-sided dolphin, and the Black Sea bottlenose dolphin. The Black Sea bottlenose dolphin and the Azov dolphin are listed in the Red Book of Russia, while the white-sided dolphin is listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Crimea. This means that these species are threatened with extinction, and comprehensive measures need to be taken to protect and conserve them.
