One comes from Murmansk and just “always” wanted an apartment with a sea view. The other is from Tatarstan and is a bit concerned that the Ukrainians might return. The third thinks that the city will become even more beautiful under Russian rule than under Ukrainian rule. What all three have in common is that they are not from Ukraine, but from Russia – and yet they are looking for new, cheap places to stay in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on social media and on the housing market. The port city on the Azov Sea was almost completely destroyed by Russia. However, because the propaganda evokes the “miraculous” reconstruction of Mariupol, many now sense the deal of a lifetime with cheap apartments on occupied ground, like a BBC research brought to light over the weekend.
