Russian resolution at UN: India withdraws

India has withdrawn from a resolution tabled by Russia at the UN Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Russia has demanded that the United Nations protect Ukrainian citizens and declare a ceasefire for evacuation. Russia introduced the resolution without mentioning its own military action.

Only China and Russia supported the resolution. The 15-member council needed nine votes to pass the resolution. The resolution failed as the rest of the world, including India, abstained. India abstains in the fifth vote on Ukraine at the UN Security Council.

Linda Thomas Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said Russia was only blaming Ukraine for the resolution. Russia’s urgent problems need to be addressed. “Millions of people and their dreams are gone,” Greenfield said.
