Russian regulator approves higher number of seats on Yakovlev MC-21

The new Russian medium-haul aircraft MC-21-300/310 is now authorized to transport 211 passengersfollowing the approval of the main modification to the type certificate.

The necessary approval has been issued by the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia on December 26. Previously, the jet aircraft, which was not yet mass-produced, was allowed to carry a maximum of 175either 26 down.

Before approval was issued, emergency evacuation tests of passengers and crew were carried out. The aircraft’s compliance with all airworthiness standards was confirmed, as well as the operation of the MC-21 emergency rescue equipment. In addition, the effectiveness of the training of cabin crew and flight crew and the quality of the operational documentation developed have been demonstrated, affirms the aircraft manufacturer.

The approval issued by Rosaviatsia will make it possible to supply airlines with the MC-21 with all layout variants, including the largest, noted Andrei Boginsky, Deputy General Director of United Aircraft Corporation – General Director of PJSC “Yakovlev”.

Yakovlev produced two versions of the MC-21: the MC-21-300 powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1400G and the MC-21-310 which is equipped withAviadvigatel PD-14 100% Russian manufacturing and allowing it to circumvent Western sanctions due to the invasion of Ukraine. Certification and start of deliveries of the import substitution version of the new Russian medium-haul aircraft MC-21 are still planned for 2024. However, the first flight of the Russified version of the MC-21-310RUS has already been postponed by 2023 to 2024.

The Russian aeronautical sector is pursuing strategic shifts. UAC has just relaunched production of the single-aisle aircraft Tupolev Tu-214the first copies of which are planned to be delivered in 2024. The Tu-214 is a twin-engine narrow-body aircraft derived from the Tu-204 (210 passengers, radius of 6,500 km). The Kazan aircraft factory is commissioned by the Russian government to assemble 70 TU-214 aircraft to replace the A320 and 737. From 2025, Russia plans to produce this medium-haul model at a rate of ten aircraft per year. By 2027, there should be 20 per year.
