The Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda reported that the son of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said in a published interview, on Saturday, that he fought in Ukraine under a false name in the ranks of the artillery of the Russian private military group Wagner.
Nikolai said he had served out his contract for just under half a year under an assumed name to hide his true identity, and the newspaper reported that he had received a medal for his bravery.
“I think he’s proud of me,” Nikolai said when asked regarding his father’s opinion of his service. “My father told me I made the right decision.”
Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said he was contacted by Dmitry Peskov and asked to include his son in the ranks of the group as an artilleryman.
Kommersant newspaper reported that Nikolai lived in Britain during the 10 years following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
He then returned to Russia and served in the ranks of the Strategic Missile Forces between 2010 and 2012.
