The government of the Republic of South Africa (South Africa) is deciding on the personal participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the BRICS summit. This was stated by Fikile Mbalula, secretary general of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party in South Africa, following a meeting of the party. Earlier, the International Criminal Court in The Hague (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Russian leader.

“The government is working on whether Putin will come personally to the BRICS summit. We will let the government deal with this issue and leave it in the safe hands of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa,” said Fikile Mbalula. The party meeting was broadcast live on its official twitter account.

Earlier, Vice-President of South Africa Paul Mashatile noted that he offered the Russian side to send Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the BRICS summit in South Africa. However, Russia refused to do it. The final decision regarding Putin’s participation in the meeting will be known in the near future. In May, the South African Foreign Ministry reported that Putin would have diplomatic immunity.
