Russian pregnant women: the response of the Russian Embassy to Migrations for the figure of “false tourist”

Under the figure offake tourist” Migrations detained six Russian pregnant women who arrived in the country without a return ticket and money. However, The Russian Embassy questioned the decision of the body led by Florencia Carignano.

PROFILE spoke with the head of the consulate of the Russian Embassy in Argentina, Georgy Polin, in this regard who considered that “the figure of the false tourist is a very imprecise phrase”.

In this sense, he recalled that there is a visa-free agreement signed between Russia and Argentina that “enables country citizens to enter the respective nations with their passport and stay for 90 days without commercial purposes, without the intention of settling”.

Russian pregnant women were released by Justice.

Regarding the large arrival of pregnant Russian women in Argentina, the head of the consulate of the Russian Embassy acknowledged that there is a growing number, since “they are arriving in large numbers, between 12 and 15 times more than other years”. “We are very aware of this because They come to ask for the Russian passport at the Embassy”, he added.

The agreement and criticism of Migrations

The agreement mentioned by Polin was signed in 2009 between the two nations under the presidency of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. This treaty establishes thatNationals of the State of one of the parties, holders of valid passports, with the exception of diplomatic, official and service passports, which enable the crossing of the border, may enter, leave, transit and remain in the territory of the State from the other party without visas for up to 90 days (ninety) in each period of one hundred and eighty days from the date of first entry”.

For Russia, this includes that a person can spend that time visiting a relative, receiving a short education course, doing unpaid work as a volunteer; that is to say, it does not include exclusively tourist purposes”, said Polin and remarked: “It doesn’t say anything regarding tourism”.

They raided apartments in Puerto Madero due to the arrival of pregnant Russian women

Consequently, he lashed out at the body led by Carignano by expressing: “We do not know when Argentina or Migrations began to take it as something exclusively tourist”. and I add: “We do not know what is the interpretation that is made regarding the agreement in which birth tourism enters”. For this very reason, he called for “improving these legal tools”, but he tried not to make statements regarding the judicial status of the six detained women and preferred to wait for a resolution from the Justice.

In turn, he recalled that Argentine legislation is what allows any child born in the national territory to automatically receive citizenship, as well as that “Argentine law allows extension of stay or change of migratory category following you have already entered the country’s territory”.
