Romania, a NATO member country, announced on Saturday that it had detected a possible violation of its airspace during nighttime attacks launched by Russia on infrastructure in the Danube region in neighboring Ukraine.

Since its exit in July from an agreement on Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea, Moscow has intensified its attacks on the Odessa and Mikolayev regions which house essential infrastructure for grain exports, in the south of Ukraine.

After groups of drones were detected heading towards Ukrainian territory near the Romanian border“, residents of the towns of Tulcea and Galati were alerted, the Romanian Ministry of Defense said in a statement. The Romanian army’s radar surveillance system showed possible unauthorized penetration into national airspace, with a signal detected on a road leading to the town of Galati“, the statement said. The Ministry of Defense added that so far no object appears to have fallen into Romanian territory.

The search was expected to continue on Saturday. On Friday, in the middle of the night, residents of Galati and Tulcea, which face the port of Reni, in southern Ukraine, on the other side of the Danube, were called to shelter. The measures taken during this alert were lifted approximately two hours later. Earlier in September, Romanian soldiers built air raid shelters for residents of the village of Plauru, near the Ukrainian border following debris from a drone was discovered in the area. Since the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO has strived to avoid the war spilling over into its territory.
