Russian Missile Attacks: Ukraine’s Defense and Western Support

2024-01-05 17:11:38

According to Kiev’s count, Russia has sent around 12,500 rockets and kamikaze drones into Ukrainian territory. At least Ukraine is getting better and better at shooting down the projectiles before they hit, thanks in part to Western arms supplies.

The hope that Russia will empty its supplies with the massive waves of attacks in recent weeks might be premature, as the “Tages-Anzeiger” writes.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence service estimates that Russia is currently producing around 100 missiles per month. And the country might double this capacity in 2024, writes the Estonian Ministry of Defense in a report.

During the last wave of attacks, Russia fired around 300 missiles. Depending on capacity, the country needs one to one and a half months to produce that many bullets.

Ukraine has also ramped up its arms industry. And this is under fire from Russia. Because the facilities are not allowed to be photographed, no images of them are made public.

According to Kiev, the Ukrainian air defense is able to shoot down hypersonic missiles, something that was long described as impossible.

Massive Russian airstrikes are forcing Ukraine to empty its ammunition stocks. This might also be a goal of the Russian strategy. Ultimately, the war in Ukraine is also a battle of attrition between industries. Whoever holds out longer has the upper hand.
