United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine Denise Brown condemned a Russian missile attack on the center of the city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine.

It is “appalling to attack the main square of a major city,” Brown said in a statement.

The attack left several people dead – including a 6-year-old girl – and at least 90 people injured.

“I am extremely disturbed by the news of another Russian attack that recently hit the heart of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, leaving dozens of civilians dead and injured, including children,” Brown said.

“It is atrocious to attack the main square of a big city, in the morning, while people are walking, some go to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” he added. This Saturday marks an important holiday in the Orthodox calendar, the Feast of the Transfiguration.

“I condemn this repeated pattern of Russian attacks on populated areas of Ukraine, causing death, mass destruction and growing humanitarian needs,” he continued.

“Targeted attacks once morest civilians or civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law. It must stop.”
