A Russian official in charge of military mobilization in Krasnodar (southwest) was shot dead, authorities said Monday evening, in the midst of a recruitment campaign to fight in Ukraine.

In a statement, the Investigative Committee said the body of the 42-year-old man was found Monday morning with “gunshot wounds” on a street in this important city of one million inhabitants.

According to the same source, the man was the deputy head of the town hall in charge of “mobilization operations” in the army in Krasnodar.

Investigators are working to establish the identity of the perpetrator and the motive for the crime, the Investigation Committee said.

The state-run TASS news agency, relying on police sources, claimed the victim’s name was Stanislav Rjitski.

A Russian deputy and ex-mayor of Krasnodar, Yevgeny Pervychov, claimed on Telegram that Stanislav Rjitski had served in the Russian navy, where he notably commanded the submarine “Krasnodar”.

According to the BAZA media, he still had the rank of frigate captain and was shot while jogging.

The Russian army has been carrying out a vast military recruitment campaign since April, massively disseminating advertisements to encourage people to join the army with the promise of high salaries and social benefits.

The objective is to reconstitute decimated ranks on the Ukrainian front, without resorting to a new mobilization, an unpopular measure that the Kremlin had taken in September following several setbacks.

Since the start of the offensive in Ukraine, a sign of a certain hostility to the conflict, dozens of people have been arrested and accused of having set fire to, or of having wanted to set fire to, recruitment centres.
