[新頭殼newtalk] Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were confirmed to meet at the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization” summit in Uzbekistan on Thursday (15th) and Friday (16th). While Russia lost a series of wars last week, experts believe Xi is anxious about the direction of the war, as China still needs an anti-Western leadership in Moscow.

The Ukrainian government forces launched a blitzkrieg offensive on the 10th in the northeastern Kharkiv Oblast, successfully regaining a strategic town that had been occupied by the Russian army for 6 months. The flag flew again. The Ukrainian military also announced on the 11th that it had regained at least 3,000 square kilometers of lost land around Kharkiv in the northeast, and continued to counterattack in the eastern Donbass and southern regions.

Archyde.com quoted George Magnus, author of the book Red Flags, as saying: “I can imagine that Xi Jinping, privately, would be the most anxious about how Putin’s war would go, worried Whether Putin or Russia will still play a role sometime in the near future, as China still needs an anti-Western leadership in Moscow.”

Li Linyi, a current political commentator of The Epoch Times, also said: “Russia’s retreat will be very worrying for the CCP. Russia is one of the few anti-Western countries in the world, and it shares the same political position as the CCP. Although the CCP is worried about Russia’s defeat in the Russian-Ukrainian war, as long as Putin does not step down, the CCP will not be too nervous. If Putin has a crisis of stepping down, then the CCP may take action.”

A Ukrainian government-backed trade fair abruptly canceled a Ukrainian-hosted event promoting investment opportunities for the country, a Ukrainian diplomat said, a move that could further stigmatize China Support Russia by default in conflicts. Li Linyi believes: “Now Ukraine has also discovered that the CCP will not change its position of supporting Russia, so there are reports that Ukraine is preparing to slowly turn to ‘pro’ Taiwan.”
