KYIV, June 20 (Archyde.com) – Ukraine’s Defense Ministry intelligence chief Budanov said on Thursday that Russian forces had laid landmines around a reservoir that supplies cooling water to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in the south. he told local television.
The plant, which has six reactors and is Europe’s largest, has been occupied by Russian forces since shortly following it launched its invasion of Ukraine in February last year. “Frighteningly, since the occupation, the (Russian military) have added mines to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, planting them in the cooling water reservoirs,” Budanov said, but did not provide evidence.
Both Russia and Ukraine have accused the other of shelling the facility and its surroundings at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The international community has been trying to turn the area into a demilitarized zone, but so far it has been unsuccessful.
