This was stated by the university’s chief researcher Artur Karimov.
He said: “The robotic artist can draw with different lengths, widths and curves on the canvas, which greatly expands his functions. He is able to draw paintings with lines of different thicknesses and shapes and repeat the artist’s style, in addition to being able to use the art of handwriting.
The university’s press service explained that this project is a unique Russian development that will, over time, help artists restore masterpieces. Unlike its counterparts, which are based on the machine principle, the robot invented by the university is a robotic arm that moves in three-dimensional space, and can hold a regular round brush for drawing. The robotic arm is attached to the table on which the canvas is located.
The robot development project was launched at St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University in 2016, and a prototype of the machine was prepared a few years later. Previously, he could only paint paintings in black and white, and in 2022 the robotic painter learned to obtain any color and shade of paint for painting, thanks to the development of acrylic paint mixtures and special algorithms,. The university’s press service confirmed that the robot mixes paints independently, avoiding errors in color display that are typical even for high-tech printers.
Now the robot can independently apply areas of different thicknesses and shapes. University researchers conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the application of long, complex drawings using a brush. The data formed the basis of a special mathematical model that made it possible to calibrate the robot.
