During a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, Lavrov said: “Once again, the Middle East is on the brink of a major war, which some people seem to want very much.”
Lavrov called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the region to prevent further bloodshed, stressing that this would “create the conditions for a political and diplomatic settlement.”
He stressed that “it is necessary to immediately stop the cycle of violence before the situation eventually gets out of control,” noting that “there are those who desperately want this and there are those who are trying to ignite a major war.”
He added: “I would like to address the representatives of the United States individually. The choice is yours: to continue obstructing the work of the Security Council, or to stand on the side of peace, on the side of the international community, and demand an end to the war. If it were not for your full support for Israel, the conflict could have been ended quickly and effectively.” Pointing out that this “will help create conditions for a return to peace talks regarding the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
He stressed that “the Security Council is not just a platform for exchanging views on the most pressing global issues, but it is also the main body for maintaining international peace and security, which possesses a complete set of time-tested tools to impose its decisions.”
He continued: “Council members must put the interests of the peoples of Palestine and Israel above narrow, self-interested political calculations and demand an immediate ceasefire, the release of all illegally detained persons, and full and unhindered access to humanitarian aid.”
Earlier on Friday, Israeli forces carried out raids on the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, using 2,000-pound bombs weighing fortifications, dropped by F-35 stealth fighters.
