The main premiere of 2023 in Russian figure skating – the show program tournament – is returning. The organizers did not change the criteria for selecting participants. World or Olympic champions were admitted without a queue, but everyone else was asked to fill out an application with a brief description of the idea for the future act. It didn’t happen without surprises.
The main surprise was the sudden increase in the number of speakers. Instead of the promised 18 performances, fans will see 23 “competing” performances and 5 more as demonstration ones. It is difficult to understand how the group of “reserves” differs from the main list – probably, they simply will not be graded or awarded prizes.
The group’s ignorance immediately catches your eye Eteri Tutberidze. A year ago, four skaters competed from Khrustalny, but now none are planned. Kamil Valiyev Let’s take it out of the equation – although the Russian Challenge is considered a commercial tournament, taking into account the current disqualification, it is still not worth the risk. She received a huge amount of criticism for the production – maybe this time Zagitova did not take risks?

Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovsky They missed the tournament for the second time, despite their love for the originality of the show. The athlete has managed to establish himself as a creative figure skater who is ready to throw himself headlong into the most unconventional and unexpected images. Apparently, Matvey was eliminated. It is unlikely that Vetlugin did not come up with something creative with his experience of bright show numbers.
Compared to the debut tournament, the number of top finishers should have dropped sharply. Olympic champions Sochi 2014 Ekaterina Bobrova and Tatiana Volosozhar, obviously, would not be able to participate due to pregnancy. Nevertheless, the legendary Maria Petrova/Alexey Tikhonov. Stasya was never a Russian figure superstar, so perhaps her idea turned out to be really worthwhile. Especially taking into account the unplanned expansion of the list – if the idea was unsuccessful, Konstantinova might simply not be invited.
Here’s the clearance Vasilisa Kaganovskaya and Maxim Nekrasova looks controversial. The couple is completely new, having not performed in any official tournament. A year ago joint application Alexandra Trusova and Ivan Bukin rejected due to non-compliance with regulations. At the same time, Trusova, a single skater, had already learned several lifts at that time and was ready to perform a full routine with Bukin. The only difference from Kaganovskaya/Nekrasov is that Vasilisa is an experienced dancer. It would be more logical to classify them together with similar newcomers Elizaveta Pasechnik/Dario Chirisano to the status of spare parts, and to include, for example, bright ones in the “basis” Sofya Leontieva and Daniil Gorelkin.
We can only hope that all participants will have time to adequately prepare for the “Russian Challenge”. There is regarding a week left before official rehearsals, during which time you need to stage a program and decide on costumes. Many skaters will be busy this weekend at the Channel One Cup, so the task looks difficult.
