Russian saber fencer Valeria Kobzeva excluded from the list of participants in the European Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, which will be held from 16 to 18 June.
On the eve of the Russian Fencing Federation called six athletes who will compete in the tournament. In addition to Kobzeva, Alena Lisina and Anna Smirnova were supposed to compete in the saber fencing competition in a neutral status.
According to Inside the Games, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine accused Kobzeva of violating the participation rules for neutral athletes, in particular, by liking CSKA posts “supporting” the special operation.
“Kobzeva’s actions have once more sparked discussions regarding the role of athletes as public figures and the impact of their statements on international relations,” the Ukrainian agency said.
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced the admission of Russians even before the recommendations of the IOC, however, the leaders of the national team, including Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya, Sofia Pozdnyakova (Lokhanova) and Yana Yegoryan, were not on the list of athletes. Most of the ineligible players play for CSKA.
