After the departure of foreign NGOs working on the eco-agenda from Russia, the topic of ecology in the country did not fade away, but continued to develop. The General Director of the Presidential Grants Fund, Ilya Chukalin, announced this to URA.RU while summing up the results of this year’s first presidential grants competition. According to him, the “green agenda” has traditionally been popular among Russian non-profit organizations.

“This area is in great demand despite the fact that some foreign organizations have left, but all projects are being implemented. Initially, there were several large projects, including in the Far East, that were financed by Russian private business, and it continues to allocate funds for environmental projects. We see that their amount of funding far exceeds that of the state,” said Chukalin, adding that the eco-agenda is now “in the vector of special attention.”

In the first grant competition of 2024, out of 469 projects in the area of “Environmental protection and animal protection,” 77 received funds for implementation. This is more than a year earlier – in the first competition in 2023, 68 eco-projects became winners. The winner of the largest grant in this direction was the Penza regional charitable foundation “Helping Hand for Homeless Animals” (8.8 million rubles).

Earlier, experts shared their opinion with URA.RU that this year the eco-agenda will be one of the key ones. Political scientist Nikita Lyakhovetsky explained, that this is due to the fact that issues of security and conservation of biodiversity, unique flora and fauna of Russia are in the attention of the president. He noted that Vladimir Putin’s meeting with the head of Rosprirodnadzor Svetlana Radionova and his trip to Chukotka in the first working days of 2024 emphasizes the importance of the Russian eco-agenda.
