Russian Duma condemns Knesset’s position rejecting Palestinian statehood

“The Russian State Duma deputies strongly condemn the position of the Israeli Knesset, adopted on July 18, 2024, which unjustifiably and without foundation asserted that the establishment of a Palestinian state would pose a threat to Israel and its citizens, negate any solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and destabilize the region,” the State Duma statement said.

The Duma statement added that “the Israeli parliament is blatantly violating the principles and rules of international law that form the basis of the settlement in the Middle East, as well as numerous legally binding UN Security Council resolutions, which were explicitly declared as a solution to the Palestinian issue, and the establishment of two states – Israel and Palestine with sovereignty on that land.”

The statement continued: “By making such statements, the supporters of war in the Israeli parliament are trying to neutralize the growing international support for the legitimate demands of the Palestinian people and to limit the determination of supporters of a just settlement in the Middle East.”

He added: “The State Duma deputies call on the parliaments of the countries of the world and international parliamentary organizations to condemn the illegal statements of the Knesset in Israel and to make every possible effort to end the bloodshed in Palestine as soon as possible, to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and to resolve conflicts by political and diplomatic means.”

It is noteworthy that 68 out of 120 members of the Knesset in Israel voted in favor of the statement against the establishment of a Palestinian state on July 18, 2024.

Earlier, Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky announced that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East.
