Russian Dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza’s First Interview After Being Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison: “Silence in the Face of Evil Is a Form of Complicity”

2023-04-29 14:41:48

Kara-Murza has been in prison since April 2022. The opposition politician has reportedly lost 25 kilograms, his defenders say, and his health has steadily deteriorated to the point where he sometimes cannot feel his legs and left arm.

He claims he was poisoned twice – in 2015 and 2017 – because of his political activities, but continued to spend long periods in Russia.

“Now everything is relatively under control, as far as possible under my current conditions. The doctors performed the necessary medical procedures, for which I thank them very much. But the main treatment for this condition is walking, swimming, cycling, physiotherapy exercises…”, explained the activist.

“Losing your soul is the last thing that should happen in prison. Good books, prayer, exercise help. The letters that come from all over Russia and other countries help me a lot. Thank you to all who write to political prisoners. It is important”, adds the opponent of the Kremlin.

“I knew my sentence a year ago, when I saw in the rear-view mirror that I was being followed by masked men in black uniforms. This is the price of silence in our country now. I must admit that I was, however, surprised by the way it went and that in the political processes we did not even go back to the 1970s, but to the 1930s,” Kara-Murza said.

He believes that a “Stalinist demonstrative sentence” has been handed down. “Despite the fact that my ‘trial’ was closed, all the spectator benches were filled with employees of the apparatus of the Moscow City Court and propagandists from the state press, while my relatives, friends and associates waited in the corridor. Only my mother was allowed to come to the verdict. This technique is also from the Soviet past, this is how the “trials” of dissidents were held,” explained the prominent opponent.

I could, perhaps, have bought my personal freedom at the price of conscience, at the price of betraying my convictions, but this price is unacceptable.

Vladimir Kara-Murza:

The activist said he was impressed by the support and solidarity of a huge number of people, “both in Russia and around the world.”

“I have no doubt that the darkness over our country will dissipate. And this will happen much sooner than it might seem to those who today pronounce longer prison sentences for their words than for crimes,” the opposition politician said.

Kara-Murza, who holds dual Russian and British citizenship, was charged with three counts of high treason, “high treason”, spreading “false information” about the Russian military and illegal activity for an “undesirable” organisation.

It was the heaviest sentence of its kind since Russia criminalized criticism of its military shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.

I have always believed that silence in the face of evil is a form of complicity, especially for a politician. Therefore, whatever the price of silence in our country today, the price of silent complicity is unacceptable.

Vladimir Kara-Murza:

Kara-Murza’s trial is the latest in a series of cases against opposition voices in Russia as part of a crackdown that has intensified since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine last year.

Three years ago, Kara-Murza gave an interview to Libertatea in which he spoke about his and other Russian opponents’ efforts to block Putin’s plans to extend his stay in power. The opposition’s efforts ultimately failed.

“I would like to believe that Putin’s rule of a quarter of a century will be the final demonstration for our country against the repetition of such things in the future. Every dictator believes that his power is eternal. but, as we know, history often makes adjustments to their plans”, he added.

“Over the years of political activity, I have not been able to sufficiently convince my compatriots and the politicians of democratic countries of the danger that the current Kremlin regime represents for Russia and the world. Today it is obvious to everyone, but at a terrible cost. If I could change one thing, I would make sure that Russia has a legally elected democratic government that respects both the rights and freedoms of its own citizens and civilized norms of international behavior. Then we would live in a completely different world”, concluded Vladimir Kara-Murza.
