India abstained from the UN Security Council vote demanding that Russia pay compensation to Ukraine. A draft resolution on remedies and reparations for aggression against Ukraine, introduced by Ukraine, was approved by 94 countries in the 193-member General Assembly. 14 countries voted against, while 73 countries abstained. Russia, Belarus, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran and Syria voted against.

Along with India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Israel, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka abstained from the vote. The resolution expressed deep concern over the loss of life, refugee problem, destruction of infrastructure and natural resources, loss of public and private property and economic disaster caused by the conflict. India has taken the position that the reparations process will not help efforts to resolve the conflict. India’s UN Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said the legal validity of such a move is unclear. They added that actions that hinder the possibility of peace talks should be avoided.

India’s stance on the issue so far is that it needs a solution through dialogue and diplomacy. India has abstained from several resolutions related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including the UN Security Council and the Human Rights Council.
