Russian company Sukhoi begins production of airborne strike drone

The Sukhoi press service said in a statement that the S-71 has two versions. The first is the S-71K (Kavior), which operates as an air-to-surface guided missile. The second, the S-71M, is a strike drone called the Monochrome.

The S-71 has a trapezoidal fuselage for increased stealth, folding wings and inverted V-shaped fins. It is powered by a single TRDD-50 turbofan engine, the same one used in missiles such as the Kha-59M and Kha-101 air-launched missiles. The S-71 has a rear air intake, can reach speeds of Mach 0.6 (about 500 km/h), and can fly at altitudes of up to 8,000 meters.

The S-71K uses Russian cluster munitions. The more capable S-71M is equipped with electro-optical sensors to support day and night operations and thermal imaging devices. The drone can also search for, detect and engage targets using targeting data stored on board the drone.

Sukhoi says the drone can be used with an operator to guide it to a chosen target, and the S-71M carries a high-explosive charge among its warheads. The S-71K can be transported by aircraft, while the S-71M can also be carried inside the weapons compartment of the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter or the S-70 Okhotnik strike drone.
