A Russian citizen who allegedly sent cryptocurrency to the Ukrainian armed forces has been arrested and charged with treason. According to the report of the Russian news agency Tass, the Russian citizen is a resident of the city of Khabarovsk in the far-eastern part of the country. The accused was detained by the Russian secret service, the FSB, because he “acted once morest the security of the Russian Federation and supported the Ukrainian forces with financial contributions.” The FSB stated that the person in question contributed to the supply of aircraft, ammunition and medical aids to the Ukrainian army through third parties. The secret service has initiated criminal proceedings once morest the person, and several investigations are ongoing in the case. In April of this year, Russian authorities introduced new penalties for those convicted of supporting Ukraine’s war effort. Normally, treason is punishable by 12 to 20 years in prison, but under the latest rules, those convicted can be sentenced to life in prison. The government of Ukraine has called on the international cryptocurrency community to contribute to helping the country, in the framework of which several donation platforms have been created. Russia, meanwhile, is trying to build infrastructure that will allow companies to buy and sell goods for crypto.
