This new nighttime bombardment occurs following an attack with Ukrainian drones that blew up an ammunition depot in Crimea, causing the evacuation of the population living around it and the suspension of rail traffic on this peninsula annexed by Russia.

The death of a Russian journalist in a Ukrainian bombing also aroused the ire of the Kremlin, which had denounced a “heinous crime” and promised a “response” to those responsible for this attack.

The Russian strikes in Odessa come less than two days following Moscow announced it had conducted missile-firing military exercises in the Black Sea, where tensions have risen since the expiration of a grain deal crucial to the world’s diet, which allowed the export of Ukrainian grain.

Overnight from Thursday to Friday, Russian Kalibr-type cruise missiles fired from the sea also hit the Odessa region, marking the fourth night of consecutive attacks, according to the governor.

The night before, drones and missiles struck Odesa and Mikolaiv, another major city in southern Ukraine, killing at least three people and injuring around 20.
