Russian attacks targeting Ukraine’s grain infrastructure along the Danube show that Vladimir Putin “does not care” about the supply of essential foodstuffs to developing countries, American diplomacy said on Wednesday.

“This is unacceptable. Putin doesn’t care about global food security,” US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

After several attacks in early August, the Russian army again targeted Danube port infrastructure overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday with drones.

“As a result of enemy strikes on one of the Danube ports: grain warehouses were damaged,” Odessa region governor Oleg Kiper said on social media.

Ukraine also announced on Wednesday the departure of a first commercial cargo ship from the port of Odessa, defying Russia, which has been threatening to sink such ships since it slammed the door of the agreement allowing the export of Ukrainian cereals.

Washington calls on Moscow to return “immediately” to this agreement.

“The contrast is very clear. Our Ukrainian partners are inspiring the world while Russia is starving the world by weaponizing food,” said Vedant Patel.
